PSI seeks a Regional Researcher for Southern Africa to provide support to PSI’s global mission. This full time position is based in Johannesburg, South Africa and will report to the CSM, Project Director. The regional researcher would start on or before July 1st, 2010 and provide capacity building support, technical assistance and analysis to PSI programs in 8 countries in the Southern Africa region: South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Madagascar.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The regional researcher collaborates across PSI departments to:

- Manage and implement research monitoring and evaluation activities, including study designs, questionnaire development, analysis, and dissemination;
- Train country-level researchers and build capacity to design studies, oversee data collection, and analyze/interpret results;
- Work with country-level researchers to develop annual research portfolios and manage local research subcontractors;
- Design quantitative studies to segment populations, monitor social marketing activities over time, and evaluate intervention effectiveness;
- Design qualitative studies to create multidimensional scales, develop communication concepts, and pretest communication strategies;
- Analyze study data, write reports, and deliver presentations to internal and external stakeholders;
- Provide technical assistance to country platforms to build skills in interpreting research results and using a research to action approach to guide program decisions and activities;
- Develop training materials and research toolkits (best practice statements) to build capacity of local researchers and partner organizations;
- Present and Publish research findings;

QUALIFICATIONS:

- PhD in public health, behavioral sciences, population studies, psychology, communication, or a related field preferred
- At least five years of professional experience in applied research
- Design, analysis, dissemination, and management of quantitative and qualitative behavioral research pertaining to HIV/AIDS, family planning, malaria, or child survival;
- Study design for specific target groups: sex workers, or other key populations at higher risk for HIV/AIDS;
- Management of multiple studies and teams in different countries;
- Experience developing training materials and toolkits;
- Research experience in East and Southern Africa; and
- Partnership development with internal senior management, external donors, and NGOs.

The successful candidate will also have:

- Extensive knowledge of a statistical analysis program (R, SPSS or STATA) and the ability to conduct multivariate analysis;
- Experience analyzing qualitative data (in Ethnograph, Atlas TI, or similar program);
- Experience with mapping studies and maintaining GIS
- Ability to train, manage, and develop capacity with country-level staff;
- Excellent analysis and writing skills;
- Experience in market research;
- Ability to work with social marketers to generate actionable research;
- Excellent interpersonal skills ;
- Fluency in English; and
- Ability to travel up to 50% of time internationally.

Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in low income countries, knowledge of public health issues and social marketing products (HIV/AIDS, family planning, malaria, maternal/child health and safe water), and familiarity with the international donor development community (Royal Netherlands, USAID, DFID, KFW, etc.).
